Yucatán (officially Estado Libre y Soberano de Yucatán), is one of the 31 states which, with the Federal District, comprise the 32 Federal Entities of Mexico. It is divided in 106 municipalities, and its capital city is Mérida.
Under Spanish rule, Yucatán Peninsula was a single administrative and political entity, the Captaincy General of Yucatán. On two occasions following Mexico's independence, Yucatán spent two periods as an (unrecognized) independent nation, the first time for less than a year in 1823, the second 1841-1848, before rejoining Mexico as a state. This state was partitioned twice - the first time in 1858 to form Campeche, the second in 1902 to form Quintana Roo.

Yucatan was a province of Nueva España, situated between Mexico and Guatemala, with a considerable seacoast. Its northeastern tip was just a short sail away from the island province of Cuba.
Literary comment[]
Yucatan comprises the OTL Mexican states of Yucatán, Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Tabasco. It may contain parts of Chiapas and Veracruz as well, but the map is not detailed enough for certainty.[1]
