During the Great War, he volunteered for the United States Army and was deployed on the Roanoke Front. Before leaving for action for the first time he had premarital sex with Sophie, and conceived a child. Reisen returned to marry Sophie while on furlough, but he was killed in action before his child was born. He never knew his son, Yossel Reisen Jr., who was named after him.
