Yossel Reisen Jr. (b. 1915) was the son of Sophie Hamburger and Yossel Reisen Sr. and the nephew of Flora Hamburger. Reisen was conceived out of wedlock before his father, a United States Army volunteer during the Great War, was sent to the Roanoke Front. After learning of his mother's pregnancy, his father married her in a civil ceremony, but he was killed in action before the younger Yossel's birth.[1]
When Reisen turned 18, he was conscripted and served his two years doing occupation duty in Canada. His aunt Flora was privately relieved he was sent to the relatively quiet north rather than south to the open sore that was the U.S. state of Houston.[2]
Years later, Yossel was called up to the US Army during the Second Great War and initially served in Ohio.[3] Alongside his friend and comrade Armstrong Grimes, he helped suppress the Mormon uprising in Utah during that war and saw action against Canadian rebels. Following Grimes' wounding, Reisen assumed command of their platoon.
His comrades frequently joked about his aunt being a Congresswoman.
