Wren Tisdale in The Guns of the South[]

Wren Tisdale was a veteran of the Second American Revolution. He had fought in the Chicora Guards of the 47th regiment. After the war, he operated the Liberty Bell Saloon in Nashville, North Carolina. He was a dark, dour man whose looks belied his name.[1]

Mollie Bean stayed at one of the rooms above the Liberty Saloon when she came to Nashville to meet Nate Caudell. On January 18, 1868, Bean led Caudell up to her room to show him the copy of The American Heritage Picture History of the Civil War she'd obtained. Tisdale was behind the bar when the two went up to Bean's room. As it was Sunday, the bar was empty. When Tisdale saw the two headed up, he raised his eyebrows but said nothing. Caudell was embarrassed anyway.[2]

Later that year, Confederate President Lee imposed martial law on North Carolina after the Richmond Massacre. This included a ban on the sale of alcohol. While the Liberty Bell's front door was locked, Caudell suspected that Tisdale would sell alcohol out the back door.[3]
