Wilhelmshaven is a coastal town in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is Germany's main military port. The town is named Wilhelm's Harbor for King Wilhelm I of Prussia, who in founded the town in 1869 as a naval base for the nascent Prussian navy.

During World War II (1939–1945), Allied bombing destroyed two thirds of the town's buildings, while the main target, the Naval Shipyard, remained operational despite serious damage. On 28 April 1945, a coalition of Canadian and Polish forces captured Wilhelmshaven.
