Wade Hampton V (d. June 1922) was the eleventh President of the Confederate States from March 4, 1922 until his assassination in June of that year. He was the first president to be assassinated in either the CS or the United States.
The grandson of pro-slavery South Carolina Senator Wade Hampton III, Hampton and Burton Mitchel were elected on the Whig ticket in 1921, defeating Jake Featherston and Ferdinand Koenig of the Freedom Party in a close election. While speaking in Birmingham, Alabama in 1922, Hampton was shot and killed by Grady Calkins, a rogue member of the Freedom Party. As a result, the Freedom Party's soaring popularity crashed, with only a handful of adherents remaining. The Whigs regained and held on to much of their old popularity, until their poor response to the stock market crash in 1929 drove the C.S. back to the Freedom Party.
