Volya was a soldier of the Soviet Union. In 1947, he was part of Fedor Tolbukhin's Fourth Ukrainian Front, participating in the raid on German-occupied Zaporozhye. He disdained the precaution of pouring vodka on the ground to throw bloodhounds off their track, calling it a waste of good vodka. General Tolbukhin told him that if it kept them alive, it was not wasted, and Commissar Khrushchev agreed.[1]
