Verina was the wife of Mordec, the blacksmith of Duthil in Cimmeria. She was a strong woman who gave birth to Conan on a battlefield, but had become an invalid with tuberculosis by the time Conan was 12. At this time Cimmeria was invaded by the powerful kingdom of Aquilonia. The Aquilonians established the outpost of Venarium, a day's walk from Duthil. Mordec joined the Cimmerian resistance, but insisted that Conan was too young to fight. Mordec and Conan had an argument, which nearly resulted in father and son killing each other. Verina played the voice of reason and prevented this. Mordec joined the battle and was one of the few Cimmerian survivors.
Literary coment[]
Robert E. Howard never wrote about Conan's mother in any of his published works. In a letter to a fan named P.S. Miller, Howard opined that she was likely fatally wounded on the battlefield while pregnant with Conan, but was able to give birth to him before she died. The fact that Conan was born on the battlefield is found in Howard's work. Other authors are inconsistent on her fate, with some having her live to an old age, while others follow Howard's non-canon ideas.
