Veracruz, officially known as Heroica Veracruz, is a major port city and municipality on the Gulf of Mexico in the Mexican state of Veracruz. When Hernán Cortés arrived on Good Friday, 22 April 1519, he founded the city as Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz. Veracruz went on to become Mexico’s oldest, largest, and historically most significant port. At the 2010 census, the city had 554,830 inhabitants.
