Governor of California (for shits and giggles)

User blog

The Governor of California is the head of government of the U.S. state of California. The California Governor is the chief executive of the state government and the commander-in-chief of the California National Guard and the California State Military Reserve.

Established in the Constitution of California, the governor's responsibilities also include making the annual State of the State address to the California State Legislature, submitting the budget, and ensuring that state laws are enforced. The position was created in 1849, the year before California became a state.

As of this writing, Edmund G. "Jerry" Brown Jr. is the longest-serving governor, surpassing Earl Warren's 10-year tenure in 2013.

Governors of California in the works of Harry Turtledove

Earl Warren is referenced as the incumbent Governor in The Hot War.

Ronald Reagan is referenced in the Jefferson story "Typecasting" as a former Governor of California, a state which is slightly smaller in this timeline than in OTL.

Other alternate history works may make reference to California Governors who either died before the point of divergence or did nothing important after it. Stories set in OTL may make reference to past, present, and/or future Governors who are not specifically fictionalized within the context of the work.

Historical Governors in non-Gubernatorial roles

George Stoneman is referenced in The Guns of the South and "Must and Shall" in his OTL role as a General. Guns ends well before the date of his historical governorship, while the posthumous reference in "Must" makes no reference to his politics.

Hiram Johnson appears in American Empire: The Center Cannot Hold as the Vice President of the United States. Whether he was ever Governor in the Southern Victory timeline is not addressed.

Earl Warren appears in the Colonization trilogy as the President of the United States. It is acknowledged that he was California's State Attorney General at the POD, but it is not revealed whether he was ever Governor.

Ronald Reagan appears in American Empire: The Victorious Opposition and The Man With the Iron Heart in his OTL role as a media star. Both timelines end before he has entered politics.

Alternate heads of state/government of California Turtledove's work

In some Turtledove works, California has a status other than as a state of the United States, and some other form of Californian government exists.

In The Two Georges, "Upper California" is a province of the North American Union, and the provincial chief executive is a Governor, whose capital is in New Liverpool. John Burnett, the incumbent Governor in 1995, appears directly in the novel's early chapters.

In The Disunited States of America, California is a sovereign state which appears to have a parliamentary government. An unnamed Prime Minister, in office in 2097, is briefly referenced.
