Republican Vice Presidential candidates in Joe Steele (Guesses and Speculation)

User blog

In the novel Joe Steele, the only two Republican Vice Presidential candidates that are either mentioned or presumed to have served as in OTL. They are Charles Curtis (who presumably served under Herbert Hoover as in OTL and attempted to run as his running mate again in 1932) and Frank Knox (who ran with Alf Landon in 1936 as in OTL).

Since those were the only two Republican Vice Presidential candidates who were mentioned at all, I think we should speculate on could have been the running mates of Wendell Willkie in 1940, Thomas Dewey in 1944, Harold Stassen in 1948 and Robert Taft in 1952.

After having a discussion with TR down in the comment section, we decided to have McNary and Bricker still be the GOP VP candidates to Willkie and Dewey, respectively in 1940 and 1944 as in OTL. This is mainly because Frank Knox was tapped in 1936 and Steele's presidency doesn't somehow make either ineligible or otherwise implausible. I can agree with that and that make a lot less stressful time time find potential VP candidates for the Republicans in 1940 and 1944.

We have also narrowed the 1948 and 1952 running mates to Arthur H. Vanderburg and Earl Warren.

TR mentioned that he thinks that Vandenburg makes the most sense in '48 so that an older VP to match younger presidential candidate (Stassen). As for Warren in 52', him with Taft makes sense so that a more "progressive" Warren could help balance out the more Conservative isolationist Taft.

I agree with this because Vanderburg and Warren are IMO that only two VP candidates that seem to fit. The other potential candidates that I mentioned down in the comment section are either too old, too obscure, already ran as President, declined to run, or are already dead. With that, I give to everyone the best presumed Republican tickets in Joe Steele! They are:

I hope everyone enjoys the list. --JCC the Alternate Historian (talk) 12:55, June 15, 2018 (UTC)
