On All Saints' Day, an ancient vampire came upon a village after a long period of hunger. It immediately established the village as its hunting ground.[1]

The vampire initially targeted Guillaume, Eloise, and their child Marcel as they made their way home from visiting Raoul. However, the vampire had not fed in some time, and was quite weak as a result. It realized that Guilliaume was physically strong enough to hurt it, and so let the family go. Instead, it feasted on Clement, an elderly cobbler. The blood strengthened the vampire. It took shelter in an abandoned hut outside of the village for the day.[2]

When the people of the village found Clement's body the next day, they put a wooden stake through his heart before they buried him.[3] That night, the vampire awoke, and realized it couldn't detect the scent of a new vampire. The vampire realized that the village had discovered Clement, which meant that they were on guard. The ancient vampire was also disappointed that it would not have a companion.[4]

Then it went to the village and surveyed its inhabitants. It found Raoul's home. Seeing how padded and soft Raoul's house was, the vampire concluded that such a pampered person would taste quite sweet. Moving on, he found Guillaume and Eloise's residence. He remembered them, and decided that Guillaume's blood would give it great strength. Satisfied with what it had found, the vampire returned to its hut to bide its time.[5]

After a few nights of quiet, the vampire attacked Raoul. Raoul woke up and unsuccessfully tried to banish the vampire by making the sign of the cross.[6] The vampire bragged it was older than Christianity. When Raoul pleaded that he bled, the vampire taunted him, assuring Raoul that he did bleed, and attacked. Raoul fought, but was no match for the vampire. The vampire returned to its hut, dissatisfied with Raoul's blood.[7]

The vampire woke up the next night hungry, which it found surprising. After Raoul's weak blood, it decided to attack Guillaume.[8] The vampire found Guillaume in his carpenter's shop. When it arrived, Guillaume nearly fell under its spell. While he still could, Guillaume attacked the vampire with a chisel, causing the vampire to bleed.[9] The vampire soon felt something was wrong, as the blood continued to flow, and the strength drained from its body.[10] Guillaume was able to subdue it, explaining Raoul's hemophilia. Guillaume tied the vampire down. He then brought Eloise back to the shop, and the two of them watched the vampire burn as the sun rose.[11]
