An unnamed male author wrote a story about a character named Steve being sent back in time from the late 1980s and into the body of the legendary Japanese warrior Benkei. Steve was aware that he was fictional character, and also knew when the author rewrote and revised while telling the story of Benkei's adventures with Minamoto Yoshitsune.

While creating Steve, the author inadvertently inserted some of his own personal knowledge into his creation. Steve first entered the story in a suburb of Los Angeles, and assumed the author originally hailed from the Los Angeles area. Steve knew that the first draft of the fight between Benkei and Yoshitsune was horribly written; Steve realized that Yoshitsune quoting the Bible about the dangers of pride made no sense and that Steve's exclamation that he was the king of the world was wrong on multiple levels. Steve also knew that the author hated rewrites, and was surprised when the scene changed and he relived the first fight with Yoshitsune.

At the end of the story, the author made Steve an omniscient observer, something Steve had never been before.[1]
