Thersites was a plantation lord from Palmetto Province. He was an extremely ugly man, with a maze of dueling scars on his face, and thoroughly disagreeable, hating everything and everybody. Although he was known as a baron, he apparently gave himself the title. But no one call him out for not being a legitimate nobleman, after he killed one such detractor in a duel.
Thersites was a neighbor of Baron Ormerod. Ormerod's serf Rollant knew Thersites well enough to declare that while Ormerod was quite a cruel liege lord, Thersites was much worse.
Thersites became an officer in "King" Geoffrey's Army of Franklin during the Detinan Civil War. Holding the rank of major, Thersites took over the command of Colonel Florizel, who had been wounded. Ormerod was a captain under Thersites in this context. Thersites was killed at the Battle of Sentry Peak by a firepot.
Literary comment[]
Thersites shares his name, general description, and personality with a Greek soldier from Homer's Iliad, who also appeared in William Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida; see Shakespearean References in Turtledove's Work.
