American Empire: The Victorious Opposition is a novel by Harry Turtledove published by Del Rey in 2003. It is the third volume of the American Empire trilogy, which is itself part of the larger Southern Victory series. It begins on March 5, 1934, the day after Jake Featherston is inaugurated as President of the Confederate States, and ends on June 22, 1941, the beginning of the Second Great War.
The volume's title is derived from Ambrose Bierce's work The Devil's Dictionary. "Manichaeism (noun): The ancient Persian doctrine of an incessant warfare between Good and Evil. When Good gave up the fight, the Persians joined the victorious opposition."
