"The Star and the Rockets" is a short story, published on-line at tor.com (November, 2009).
The story depicts the historical minor league baseball player Joe Bauman's path to his record 72 home-runs with the Roswell Rockets in the 1954 season. The story suggests that among Bauman's fans were the aliens who crashed into Roswell, New Mexico in 1947, and that they somehow made his record possible.
Aside from this element, the story itself is a straightforward historical piece examining Bauman's pursuit of the record.
