"The Long Drum Roll" is an excerpt from The Guns of the South published in The Fantastic Civil War, (Baen, 1991), edited by Frank D. McSherry. The Long Drum Roll was the working title of the novel. The excerpt consists of Chapter VII, from General Robert E. Lee studying the fortifications of Washington City, to the successful night attack by the Army of Northern Virginia seizing it, and Lee's negotiation of an armistice with US President Abraham Lincoln.
