The House of Daniel is an urban fantasy novel released from Tor on April 18, 2016. The opening chapters can be read online here. It is set during the Great Depression in a United States where magic works and fantastic creatures like vampires and zombies are commonplace. The story's central protagonist and narrator, Jack Spivey, recounts his time with a barnstorming baseball team called the House of Daniel in 1934.

Despite the presence of working magic, Turtledove describes the novel as an urban fantasy only, and has explicitly rejected it as alternate history.

Ties to other works[]

The ongoing City of Shadows trilogy is set in the same continuity as The House of Daniel.

Laura Frankos' Broadway Revival includes a brief appearance of Jack Spivey; that world is devoid of supernatural elements, but Spivey interacts with a time-traveler named David Greenbaum.

The Case of the Toxic Spell Dump, "Birdwitching," and The House of Daniel are all set in worlds where magic works and supernatural elements are common. However, the three works are set in different worlds, as they have very different rules of inner logic regarding biology, theology, and other crucial matters.
