Would these by any chance be Barbie dolls? Turtle Fan 19:14, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
Oh, absolutely. TR 19:16, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
Nearly a decade later, I just realized that "Landser Sepp" is "G.I Joe". ML4E (talk) 21:34, March 16, 2015 (UTC)
- Yeah, ItPoME was pretty much a Mad Lib. The thought of Barbie-by-another-name being mass-produced at labor camps for Nazis' daughters, though, is really depressing. Turtle Fan (talk) 02:21, March 17, 2015 (UTC)
- As is my habit, I peruse Talk Pages when checking recent edits and when I read this two and a half year old comment, it occurred to me that Klaus Barbie would be the commandant of that labor camp. Except he would be almost a hundred but that wouldn't stop Turtledove. Maybe name him "Baus Klarbie". ML4E (talk) 21:36, September 15, 2016 (UTC)
Lit com[]
It's enough to say "Vicki is an analog of Barbie". I'm not sure we even need that much, but we certainly don't need to link to the Wikipedia page. TR (talk) 18:23, July 2, 2018 (UTC)
- I agree. The original comment (from almost 12 years ago!) suggests the lit comm might be useful but we don't need Wikipedia links. ML4E (talk) 19:01, July 3, 2018 (UTC)
- It looks like I made that first comment on my twenty-second birthday. I actually remember it fairly well: the day, not the comment. Turtle Fan (talk) 21:44, July 3, 2018 (UTC)
Lets be clear about references to Wikipedia and/or Fandom wikis. References to Wikipedia are not needed and should not be made. Anyone reading this wiki is already on the internet and can open another window to search out the info. Links to other fan wikis may be useful for rounding out significant information or if Turtledove is playing in some other author's works. Some examples are the various elder gods from the H.P. Lovecraft inspired stories, Conan of Venarium who has an in depth fan wiki and to a lesser extent Homes and Watson from "The Scarlet Band". "Barbie Dolls" are not that significant and so links to a fan wiki is not needed since it adds nothing to the Turtledove story. ML4E (talk) 20:23, July 4, 2018 (UTC)
Culture[]
I think "Culture" should be added as a cat. We can also now use the link to Barbie dolls in Perf Arts Ref.Matthew Babe Stevenson (talk) 08:51, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
- I'm dubious but I won't be the one to wreck consensus. Turtle Fan (talk) 16:46, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

Irrelevant Natter[]
I just removed the following: "However, the absurd court case is reminiscent of numerous alleged altercations over the Cabbage Patch Kids in the 1980s."
The novel, which is where the dispute over the doll occurs, was published in 2003. According to Cabbage Patch riots, the fights over the dolls occurred in the lead-up to Christmas 1983. The article also mentions Tickle Me Elmo fights in 1996 and the 1996 film Jingle All the Way. Either could have been the inspiration for Turtledove especially since they would be fresher in his mind.
The Lit Comm of being based on Barbie dolls is fine given the description (although American Girl dolls might fit too). However, what if anything inspired the conflict over the particular doll is pure speculation and not relevant. ML4E (talk) 19:55, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
- Agreed. My own mom had a woman try to snatch a Darth Vader action figure out of her hands in 1980. TR (talk) 19:59, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
- Agreed, it's a depressingly common occurrence.
- I wonder if we're meant to read any kind of commentary into it? Like, make the ruling class of a society comfortable enough and even Nazi ideology will be unable to keep such displays of crass consumerism at bay? Turtle Fan (talk) 15:06, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
- Or, the Nazi mindset breeds crass consumerism?Matthew Babe Stevenson (talk) 18:38, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
