Was Vaspurakan ever considered a nation, or just a region?JonathanMarkoff (talk) 12:16, April 3, 2018 (UTC)
- In TMP they plainly viewed themselves as a nation, but I think they were still "ok" with being in the Empire. TR (talk) 14:51, April 3, 2018 (UTC)
- A bit like Bavaria after 1871?JonathanMarkoff (talk) 05:55, April 4, 2018 (UTC)
- That's a very modern example. I'd look more at multinational empires from much earlier in our history. There are some things in the story that look a bit like nationalism as we know it, but only if you squint. The Vaspurakaners and Namdaleners could as easily be understood to have set themselves apart for sectarian reasons as for nationalist ones, for example.
- Otherwise, cultural and ethnic affinity don't seem to have that much impact on people's politics. Nor should they; given that HT wanted Videssos as more or less a one-to-one analog of the Byzantine Empire that he had studied so rigorously, it's hard to imagine him introducing so glaring an anachronism as nationalism.
