Why does Germany occupy India rather than Japan? Japan is much closer and pushed up to India's borders in OTL too. Barrel Nagurski 01:06, May 28, 2011 (UTC)

Obvious answer: HT wanted to have Nazis run up against Gandhi. In story answer: the Germans had Britain, so they might as well grab India while they're at it? TR 03:16, May 28, 2011 (UTC)
They didn't grab Singapore, Brunei, and what we might anachronistically call Malaysia. Maybe they grabbed Burma, I don't know. They have France but didn't take Indochina, and they have Holland but didn't take Indonesia.
I would guess Japan, whose resources are not limitless, was only able to digest so many conquests at a time, and all the Axis members knew they couldn't afford to let India run around independent. But while Germany had more resources than Japan they weren't limitless either, they were digesting at least all of Europe and half of Africa, and they would have had a harder time projecting power to India than Japan would. I guess that explanation is no stronger than TR's. Just one of those things that doesn't bear thinking about, I guess. Turtle Fan 04:46, May 28, 2011 (UTC)
So in doing some research, it would appear that at one point, Germany and Japan had divided up India, with Germany getting what is now Pakistan. However, they didn't get there until 1942. Since Britain fell in 1941 in TLA, and Japan wound up with Siberia, perhaps that gummed up the works. TR 05:15, November 13, 2011 (UTC)

Gandhi letter[]

Gandhiletter

This is interesting. (Click image to read.) I wonder if this is where HT got the idea for this story.Matthew Babe Stevenson (talk) 05:27, 4 June 2021 (UTC)

I had a little trouble making out the text but I'm quite certain one sentence reads "Will you listen to one who has seliberately [sic] shunned the method of war not without considerable success?" Am I to assume that's a typo? S is next to D on the keyboard after all.
Of course that's hardly the point. An interesting artifact. I suppose it cost him nothing to try, but I can't imagine he expected much success. (My APUSH teacher once said that Gandhi had gone on record saying that, if he'd had to deal with Hitler instead of Churchill or Atlee, he could not in good conscience have advocated for pacifism, because he'd have known that nonviolent protesters would be slaughtered. I've never found that documented, but Mr Powers knew his shit and was not one to make that sort of thing up.) Turtle Fan (talk) 05:19, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
