Imps in the novel[]
I've often thought of creating an Imp article, but after scanning the novel a zillion times, I still don't know what the fuck an imp is, within the context of the story. They operate telephones and were the subject of Arcimboldo paintings, but I still don't understand what manner of life form they are. I think HT's world building was a little bit too clever for his own good in this case.Matthew Babe Stevenson (talk) 07:22, October 21, 2020 (UTC)
- It's certainly a complicated world. I haven't read it in a dog's age (actually I'd imagine that very few dogs born the year I read it are still alive today) but from your description I thought those things were called sylphs. I remember a pair of puns about how you could encourage better performance out of them by practicing sylph-esteem and discourage bad behavior through sylph-discipline. - In the novel it's imps this, imps that. Recently I saw the Discworld film The Color of Magic which has the same kind of imp that HT was going for.Matthew Babe Stevenson (talk) 11:59, 22 April 2021 (UTC)
