Turtledove

A flock of extinct pigeons, huh? If they're extinct, that's one thing, but what's so exciting about pigeons? If it's extinct birds you want, grab a cool one. And I know they did so, but still. . . .

Actually that story is really a geekfest for bird lovers, isn't it? Our heroes throw out more avian technical detail than I ever thought I'd see outside a field guide or something. Turtle Fan 21:22, January 10, 2010 (UTC)

The intro for the story does mention HT is a birder although not fanatically so like the characters in the story. ;-)
As for the pigeons, I think it was part of the build up. The premise is that the further back in time you go the harder it gets. Lucy needed to concentrate but was normal after she summoned the pigeons (which went extinct in historical times) but passed out for a few seconds for the Archaeopteryx. HT needed something well known and extinct so it would be a toss-up between this and a Dodo. Pigeons fit the story better since the Dodo was a clumsy, flightless bird and so less likely to be spotted by other birders. ML4E 04:23, January 11, 2010 (UTC)
I was going to say I'd rather see the Dodo but yeah, the lack of flight would make it hard. Moas would have been cool--They're also flightless, but pretty damned hard to miss. Turtle Fan 06:55, January 11, 2010 (UTC)
