She refused to be a quisling to the Japs but for the wrong reasons. She left the impression that she'd have been quite happy to be a Tokyo-allied monarch with real power in her realm, like the King of Thailand. She should have rejected out of hand the idea of betraying the United States. I know she'd had legitimate grievances against the US in her youth, but by both her own admission and, not incidentally, the details of her biography, she'd done well under them and thought Hawaii had as well. She should have been opposed to the occupation on principle. Turtle Fan 01:24, November 9, 2010 (UTC)
Hawaiians category[]
A category for Hawaiians might be justified. "These characters were citizens of Hawaii when it was an independent nation, whether in OTL, a Harry Turtledove timeline, or both." We have the requisite three in Abigail, Stanley Owana Laanui, and Cynthia Laanui. I can't remember when the Sandwich Islands lost sovereignty in Southern Victory, so John Liholiho might or might not qualify. It's even possible that HT might return to Hawaii someday, in a World War II story which has island characters who remember the pre-1898 days.JonathanMarkoff (talk) 18:41, February 28, 2017 (UTC)
- Requisite three, but two were citizens under a fictional regime. Liholiho was under British rule, and they had been there a while.
- Growth potential is near 0. I don't think a category is justified. TR (talk) 18:47, February 28, 2017 (UTC)
- Given that all three come from a story that wrapped up twelve years ago, I agree there's no growth potential. And HT has returned to Hawaii more recently than that, and didn't bother introducing any native characters. Turtle Fan (talk) 05:41, March 6, 2017 (UTC)
