"Strange Eruptions" (also known as "Etos Kosmou 6816") is a short story by Harry Turtledove, first published in Asimov's, July, 1986. It is a story set in the Agent of Byzantium series, and was reprinted in the fix-up novel of the same name in 1987.
It occurs during July 1307 in the city of Constantinople. There, Basil Argyros has settled into his new position of magistrianos and found it much more mundane than he had expected. However, a smallpox epidemic in the city changes all that.
