Saint-Nazaire (sometimes rendered as St. Nazaire) is a commune in the Loire-Atlantique department in western France, in traditional Brittany.

The town has a major harbor on the right bank of the Loire estuary, near the Atlantic Ocean. The town is at the south of the second-largest swamp in France, called "la Brière". Given its location, Saint-Nazaire has a long tradition of fishing and shipbuilding.

St. Nazaire in Or Even Eagle Flew[]

Amelia Earhart, Red Tobin, Andrew Mamedoff, and Vernon Keough arrived in St. Nazaire in May, 1940. They were held there for three days, as the French authorities were suspicious of people, as the three men had no papers or identification disclosing their nationality. However, American customs agents hadn't bothered Earhart, and she was able to produce her own papers. When one bureaucrat realized who Earhart was, he permitted them to go to Paris.[1]
