The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) was an internal conflict in Spain between Monarchists and Nationalists that came to take on international importance. The war broke out when the Nationalists, with the backing of France and the United Kingdom, rose up against King Alfonso XIII. More support followed, with Britain sending volunteer troops in the form of the Unicorn Legion. Germany belatedly supported the Monarchists, and the conflict was seen as something of a contest between the Great War victor and the revanchist governments of the nations it had defeated. The Entente-backed Nationalists won, the monarchy was overthrown and abolished and was replaced with a new government.
