Smilodon

Smilodon is the best-known genus of the extinct Felid subfamily Machairodontinae, the saber-toothed cats ("saber-tooth tigers" in popular vernacular), endemic to the Americas, living from the Early Pleistocene through Lujanian stage of the Pleistocene epoch (1.8 mya—10,000 years ago), existing for approximately 1.790 million years.

Smilodon in A Different Flesh[]

Spearfang cat was the common name of a large felid that first appeared three million years ago in North and South America. When Europeans first settled in the New World, the spearfang was one of the most feared creatures they encountered. In the areas around the English colonies, the cats were heavily hunted, with a bounty of 5 pounds per fang.

Throughout the 18th and 19th Centuries, especially after the founding of the Federated Commonwealths of America in 1738, the spearfangs' numbers dwindled.

Smilodon in "Precious Treasure"[]

Before civilization fell, science was able to resurrect the sabertooth cat via cloning. Specimens survived the Great Dying, and became known as prairiecats. In some cases, prairiecats were able to form psychic links with certain humans. Peet Staiklee had a bond with a prairiecat named Crooktail.
