Sharur was the elder son of a family of merchants from the town of Gibil, in the land of Kudurru. As an adult, Sharur had become accustomed to the increasing lack of interference from the town's god, Engibil. Like much of the rest of the city, Sharur preferred Engibil's indirect rule.[1] Sharur lived with his father, Ereshguna, his mother Betsilim, his brother Tupsharru and his sister Nanadirat. The ghost of his grandfather also haunted the family.[2]

Sharur was betrothed to Ningal, whose father Dimgalabzu wanted to join his house with Sharur's house. To that end, Sharur went on a trading trip to secure Ningal's bride-price.[3]
