Scolopax was the younger brother of King Mergus of Avornis. Scolopax briefly succeeded Mergus as king, despite the fact Mergus did have a technically legitimate son, Lanius.
Scolopax and Mergus shared a deep enmity, particularly as Mergus had gone through his allotted six wives without producing a son.[1]
