The Savannah River is a major river in the southeastern United States, forming most of the border between the states of South Carolina and Georgia.

Sgt. Armstrong Grimes and his platoon ran into a Confederate ambush as they drove on the Savannah River in 1944. The platoon was pinned down by machine-gun fire and was subjected to screaming meemie bombardments. U.S. barrels arrived and cleared out the machine-guns allowing the platoon to advance in a combined arms operation with the barrels. During the fight, Lt. Bassler was wounded and two sergeants senior to Grimes were also casualties, leaving Grimes in charge of the platoon. Zeb the Hat, a member of Grimes' squad, was also killed.[1]
