A team of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), under the direction of Professor Darius Heydari, sent a probe called Sarpedon to Europa. Upon its arrival, Sarpedon drilled through the miles-deep layer of ice that covered the surface until it broke through to the ocean underneath. The drilling disturbed the various sentient lifeforms residing in the ocean beneath the ice. One species, the Quorn, took the lead in responding to the incursion from what they believed to be the roof of their world. When Sarpedon broke through, various Quorn engaged it, trying to ascertain what it was. Finally, a Quorn called Scog bit through a cable that controlled the probe's video recording equipment, though the audio recording equipment remained functional.
Based on the brief video recording and the ongoing audio recordings, Heydari was confident that the JPL would obtain funding for another probe.[1]
