The Sapphire Isle was an island across the Western Ocean from Detina. It was ruled cruelly by the nearby mother kingdom, and as a result, many Sapphire Islers emigrated to other kingdoms, including Detina. Patrick the Cleaver was one such emigre.

The Sapphire Isle is analogous to Ireland, known as the Emerald Isle. Patrick Cleburne, on whom Patrick the Cleaver is based, was an Irish immigrant from County Cork.
