The Most Serene Republic of San Marino is a country in the Apennine Mountains. It is a landlocked enclave, completely surrounded by Italy.
San Marino in The Gladiator[]
While San Marino adopted communism, its status as a resort town necessitated that it compromise much of its ideology for its economic survival. It was also fiercely protective of its autonomy. Its police were dressed garishly but carried weapons descended from the AK-47. Moreover, it expected visitors and citizens alike to behave by its rules. Annarita Crosetti, Gianfranco Mazzilli and Eduardo Caruso witnessed Sammarinese police arrest an uncooperative Soviet visitor without much concern for his status.
Crosstime Traffic established a small game shop called The Three Sixes in San Marino as a means of infiltrating capitalist ideas into the population of this alternate. When the Security Police of the Italian People's Republic learned of Crosstime Traffic's other shops in Rome and Milan, employee Caruso was left behind. With the help of Crosetti and Mazzilli, Caruso made his way to The Three Sixes, only to discover that the Security Police had already taken control of the shop.
Later, when the Sammarinese police learned that the Italians had taken control of the shop, they immediately placed the Security Police officers under arrest.
San Marino in Worldwar[]
San Marino remained neutral during the abortive World War II. In 1942 it was conquered by the Race's Conquest Fleet. Two years later, it and surrounding Italy were made part of the Greater German Reich under the Peace of Cairo.
