Clan Matheson was a British steam ship built in 1905 by the Furness, Withy & Co. of Hartlepool. She was the second ship named Clan Matheson in service with the Clan Line used on their Oriental routes. It was sunk in September 1914.
SS Clan Matheson in "Last Flight of the Swan of the East"[]
Early in the Great War, American ship Clan Matheson flew under a British flag and claimed to be based in Glasgow. The ship was even captained by a Scotsman. However, when the ship was seized by the German leviathan Emden, Captain Karl von Müller saw through the ruse. After finding an American ensign under the captain's bed and other paperwork confirming the ship's American commission, the Germans shot a racing horse the ship had been carrying, then sank the Clan Matheson after transferring the crew to the Emden.[1]
