The SMS Emden (nicknamed the Swan of the East) was a commerce raider of the German Kaiserliche Luftmarine. Launched in 1908,[1] it was attached to the Far East Squadron. Under the command of Karl von Müller, the Emden participated in the opening months of the Great War, capturing a number of prizes throughout the second half of 1914.
Emden was downed by the American leviathan Cincinnati in November, 1914, off the coast of the Philippines. Prior to the battle, Müller had deposited a landing team under the command of Hellmuth von Mücke on a nearby island. This team successfully destroyed an American eteroid refinery while the Cincinnati destroyed the Emden.[2] Mücke and his team made their way back to Germany; Müller was made a prisoner of war.
