Rollant was a blond Detinan. He was born into serfdom in Palmetto Province on Baron Ormerod's estate not far from Karlsburg. As a young man, Rollant escaped to the southern provinces and settled down in New Eborac City and worked as a carpenter. He married a free-born blond woman named Norina and had two[1] children. Like most Detinan blonds, he worshipped the dark-haired peoples' gods of Mount Panamgam; while he believed in the existence of the ancient blond gods, those deities had proven incompetent and unable to protect their people from conquest.
