Rollant was a blond Detinan. He was born into serfdom in Palmetto Province on Baron Ormerod's estate not far from Karlsburg. As a young man, Rollant escaped to the southern provinces and settled down in New Eborac City and worked as a carpenter. He married a free-born blond woman named Norina and had two children. Like most Detinan blonds, he worshiped the dark-haired peoples' gods of Mount Panamgam; while he believed in the existence of the ancient blond gods, those deities had proven incompetent and unable to protect their people from conquest.
When eleven northern provinces rebelled against King Avram's rule, Rollant joined the Detinan army, which was racially integrated. He was assigned to the 26th New Eborac Regiment and served with General Guildenstern's army on the Rising Rock campaign, with Hesmucet's on the Marthasville campaign, and with Doubting George's during the defense of Franklin Province against Bell's desperate invasion.
Despite having to overcome the racism of his ethnic Detinan comrades, Rollant served well during the war, eventually rising to the rank of sergeant and becoming color-bearer for his company, surprising himself. On Proselytizers' Rise, he killed his former lord, Ormerod.
