Roanoke in Southern Victory[]
The mining town of Big Lick, Virginia was a goal of the initial US advance from West Virginia into the Roanoke Valley during the Great War. However, the town was so tenaciously defended by the CS over the course of the battles on the Roanoke Front that the town became known in US newspapers as "Big Licking" (where "Licking" was a synonym for "defeat").
