Riga is the capital and the largest city of Latvia. With 639,630 inhabitants (2016), Riga is the largest city in the Baltic states, home to one third of Latvia's population and one tenth of the Baltic states' population.

Riga in The Hot War[]

When Latvia used World War III as an opportunity to fight for independence from the Soviet Union,[1] Riga became strategically important to both sides of the conflict. A Soviet bombing raid in December 1952 went rather badly for the Soviets.[2]

By the terms of the Treaty of Versailles which ended the war in July, 1952, the United States agreed not to aid the rebels of any Soviet satellite, including Lithuania, so long as the Soviets did not use atomics.[3] The Latvians continued their fight, often effectively.[4] Their rebellion continued on as 1952 ended.[5]

Riga in War World[]

Around 2090, the Soviet Union maintained detention centers in Riga. Russian Nationalist political prisoners were sent there, a fact which incensed Soviet official Yuri Ilyich Kronov, who regarded Latvians as inferior.[6]

Riga in Worldwar[]

Riga was in German control when the Race invaded Earth in June 1942. The senior commander on the ground, Walter von Brockdorff-Ahlefeldt, was able to hold his position under tremendous pressure, despite suffering from dysentery.[7]
