The Sentinel was a newspaper published in Richmond, Virginia. In the immediate aftermath of the Great War, its staff was made up of members sympathetic to the Freedom Party, and it eventually became the Party newspaper.
One of the more notorious stories the paper covered was a leak in the Richmond Examiner concerning Freedom Party leader Roger Kimball, who had torpedoed a U.S. warship after the CSA had surrendered in 1917. The Sentinel said in effect that anybody betraying an officer carrying out his patriotic duty was fair game to whatever happened to him. Several days later, Tom Brearley, the man who had informed the Examiner about Kimball's wartime activity, was murdered when his house was burned down. The Sentinel gleefully headlined: "Liar's house goes up in smoke!"
