Rheine is a town in the district of Steinfurt in Westphalia, Germany. It is the largest town in the district and the location of Rheine Air Base.
Rheine in The Hot War[]
During World War III, Rheine was the site of a pitched battle between NATO and Soviet forces in June 1951. The battle only lasted a day, beginning with the Soviet drive at first light. Although the U.S. forces in the town resorted to house-to-house fighting, the Soviets took Rheine before day's end.
Ihor Shevchenko was one of the invaders.[1]
