Ralph Latchett was one of the sons of Wilf and Kitty Latchett. He worked with his father on the family farm in Longyoke Fells in Yorkshire. In 1938, the family's mammoth, Old Bill, broke a tusk. Wilf Latchett engaged veterinarian George Holley to repair it, who in turn engaged dentist Aryeh Teitelbaum to build a concrete replacement.

Like his father, Ralph Latchett was worried about the health of Old Bill. Ralph was present while Holley took the impression with the molding compound, and was relieved to learn that Teitelbaum didn't want payment for the new tusk.

Ralph took over the farm after his father's death. Old Bill actually outlived Wilf Latchet.[1]
