Raleigh is the capital city of the U.S. state of North Carolina and the county seat of Wake County. It is the second-most populous city in North Carolina, after Charlotte, as well as the tenth-most populous city in the Southeast and the 41st-most populous city in the U.S. The city's population was 467,665 at the 2020 census. Raleigh has been the state capital since 1792. During the American Civil War, the city was spared from any significant battles.

Raleigh continued to function as North Carolina's capital after the Confederate States won the Second American Revolution. A popular newspaper, the Raleigh Constitution, had a wide circulation which included Nashville.
