R-strain (short for "ruminant strain") was a generically modified pig created Peter Delahanty of Genetic Enterprises. He contacted Rabbi Aaron Kaplan, a Conservative Jewish scholar who was an acquaintance of his, to determine whether the old stricture applied to the unprecedented, genetically engineered new species of cud-chewing pig.
