Priekule was the capital of Valmiera. It was the centre of Derlavaian culture and was very renowned for its aristocracy and fashion.

During the Six Years' War. Algarvian troops failed to reach Priekule.

During the Derlavaian War, the city was occupied by the Algarvians and was the centre of both collaboration and resistance.
