The Pitchstone Plateau, named after the lava pitchstone occupies the southwest corner of Yellowstone National Park in the Bechler and Fall River drainages. It is at 8,880 feet above sea level. The rhyolite lava flows that created the plateau occurred about 70,000 years ago.

The continuing eruption of a volcano at Ranger Lake first burned off the lodgepole forest on Pitchstone Plateau[1] and then remelted the lava that formed the plateau forming a new lava field.[2]
