The Pilsudski was a fishing boat that formally belonged to Tadeusz Czuma, a fisherman from Puck, Poland.

In December 1939, the boat was stolen from him for a good cause, i.e., the evacuation of the town's three Jewish families (the Friedman, Geller and Korczak Families) ahead of the Holocaust. The refugees' leader, Berel Friedman, quickly learned from the condition of the boat that Czuma was a very bad housekeeper with terrible hygiene.

Appropriate to the holiday of Chanukah, the meager supply of fuel which was only suppose to last for one day, miraculously lasted for eight days and was able take them in safety across the Baltic Sea to Sweden.[1]
