Phoenix is the capital, and largest city, of the state of Arizona. With 1,445,632 people (as of the 2010 U.S. Census), Phoenix is the most populous state capital in the United States, as well as the sixth most populous city nationwide after New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and Philadelphia.

By the 1960s, Phoenix rivaled Los Angeles for the largest community of expatriate Lizards in the United States.[1] Among those expats was the female who wrote One Life, One Mate.[2]
