PhnomPenh

Phnom Penh (/pəˌnɒm ˈpɛn, ˌpnɒm -/; Khmer: ភ្នំពេញ, Phnum Pénh [pʰnumˈpɨɲ]; lit. "Penh's Hill") is the capital and most populous city of Cambodia. It has been the national capital since the French protectorate of Cambodia, and has grown to become the nation's economic, industrial, and cultural centre.

Early in the Great War, the United States coaled their water-going ships and leviathans at Phnom Penh in Cambodge. The captain of the Norwegian ship Dovre passed this information on to Karl von Müller, the captain of the German leviathan, Emden.[1]

In the last week of October 1914, Müller decided to attack Phnom Penh.[2] While the French had fortified the city to the south and west, they'd left the north relatively unguarded, and Müller decided that was his path of attack. When Emden arrived, it found a brightly lit, active, and unaware city. Emden found the Russian leviathan Zhemchug at port. Emden quickly blew the Russian ship out of the sky. Phnom Pehn's guns began firing, and Müller ordered a retreat.[3]
